Seventeen year old LOLA FRANKLIN runs away from home but allows the world to believe she has been kidnapped. Intent on making her way across country, she meets a boy (MARLO) her age in a New Mexico diner. They fall instantly in love. But when Marlo learns of the reward for Lola's safe return, he must confront his own past and decide whether to take Lola back home to collect the reward or help her continue her mysterious journey.

High in the Mountains on a secluded farm a widowed mother dies leaving her two children alone and orphaned. Fearing being taken away and split up they keep their mother's death a secret and survive off the land with no one to rely on but each other. The sixteen year old sister is one with nature, innocent, and unaware of the evils that exist in mankind. Her ten year old brother is traumatized and mute from witnessing a disturbing incident years earlier (the death of his father) involving the town's Mayor. As the girl transitions into womanhood a harsh brutality destroys her innocence when savage hunters led by the Mayor's son attack and rape her. A social worker from a distant city arrives to investigate but ultimately it is the siblings who must come of age to protect each other and survive.

When the last day of school comes for a group of students in a philosophy class, their instructor, Mr. Zimit, challenges them to different sorts of exercises that take place in a post-nuclear apocalyptic world. While there, they each get chosen professions and have to decide whether who is valuable or not because the bunker they will be staying in for a year has only enough oxygen for 10 people. Mr. Zimit challenges them in different rounds to see how they could survive. Issues arise when they notice Mr. Zimit is disruptive to the game.

While back home, Ned starts having memories of his beautiful twin sister and himself when they were children. These memories awaken long-buried secrets from the family's past.

On Christmas Eve 1979, Cameron and his pregnant fiancée Beth are traveling through the Outback of Australia to spend Christmas with Beth's parents. In the evening, Cameron is thrown off road by a reckless driver and the couple decides to stay in a low-budget hotel in the small town of Montgomery. Late at night, Cameron is hungry and cannot sleep, so he decides to look for a restaurant. He leaves a message for Beth, but the Chinese Sky Dragon is closed and his car runs out of gas. When he returns to his room, Beth is missing and he calls the police. Cameron accuses the cynical and unhelpful hotel receptionist, Marv, but the police office does not believe him. He is arrested when he tries to hit the receptionist but while in the police car, he gets Underwood's gun and takes control of the situation. Meanwhile, Beth awakes in a bathtub full of ice and with a C-section. She seeks out her baby and finds four other women in the same situation...

The teenagers Marcus, Liz, Craig and Nina are camping in the remote outback of Australia. While driving on the road, a road train crashes on their car that leaves the road in a serious accident. The quartet survives and Craig breaks his arm, but their car is totally wrecked. However they see the train truck parked on road and Marcus and Liz walk to the vehicle to ask for help. They do not find the driver and soon Craig and Nina arrive. When they see the driver shooting at them, they decide to carjack the road train. Soon they begin to act strange possessed by some evil force.
